A screenshot (also known as screen capture or screen grab) is a digital image that shows the contents of a computer's display. A screenshot is created by the operating system or software running on the device powering the display.Additionally, screenshots can be captured by an external camera, using photography to capture contents on the screen. The first screenshots were created with the first interactive computers around 1960.Through the 1980s, computer operating systems did not universally have built-in functionality for capturing screenshots. Screens that are text-only can be saved to a text file. However, the screenshots will show only the content of the screen and not the design. Graphics screens are not able to be saved by this method. Certain systems came with a BSAVE command which could be utilized to take the memory area where screen data was stored however, this would require access to an BASIC prompt. System with composite video output could connect to an VCR and preserve complete screencasts. This, however, required access to a BASIC prompt. Screenshot kits for standard (film-based) cameras included an antireflective hood connected between the lens of the screen and the camera lens and a close-up lens. Polaroid film was popular to capture screenshots because of the instant results and the ability to focus close on Polaroid cameras.
