Leyla Mafi

 Iran remains the last country in the world that permits children to be executed.When Leyla was sentenced in 2004 she was an teen who was not yet at the age of eighteen.Tehran confirmed the decision to execute her for having illicit sexual relations. Amnesty International stated she had the mental age of an 8-year-old, which is the same age at which her mother forced her to become a prostitute. Amnesty International also claims that Leyla was sold by her parents to an Afghan man at twelve years young to be his wife for a time. Her mother in law made her prostitute at 14 and she had a baby as a result. Her family that she was born to gave her away to a husband of fifty-five years old, who made her an opium addict again. Leyla reportedly gave birth to her first child when she was nine years old.While Leyla was in prison in the midst of her execution, the world-renowned human rights journalist and activist Asieh Amini fought for her right to get Leyla as a lawyer. Leyla, despite being only 17 years old, was not able to sign the document that would have let Asieh retain her attorney. Asieh then inked Leyla's finger with ink and convinced her to sign the form. Despite the setback, she persevered.
