LaMelo LaFrance Ball (born August 22 2001) is an American professional basketball player with the Charlotte Hornets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was chosen by the Hornets with the third pick in the 2020 NBA draft. Ball was voted the NBA Rookie of the Year in 2021 and selected as an NBA All-Star the following season in 2022.Ball began high school at Chino Hills High School in Chino Hills, California, where he won the state championship as well as national fame in his freshman year with his older brothers Lonzo and LiAngelo. After his junior season an argument with his coach caused him to sign with Prienai, the Lithuanian professional team Prienai. He participated in the Junior Basketball Association in 2018 that was founded by his father. The following year, he returned to high school and became a senior at SPIRE Academy in Geneva. Ball was a five-star recruit and committed to UCLA however, he decided to forgo college basketball amid issues with eligibility and instead play in Australia for the Illawarra Hawks of the National Basketball League (NBL) in 2019.
