Bilbo Baggins is the main and the title character in J. R. R. Tolkien's 1937 novel The Hobbit. He also is a character supporting for The Lord of the Rings and is the fictional narrator for many of Tolkien’s Middle-earth writings. Gandalf selects the Hobbit to help Thorin and his group of Dwarves in their quest to recover their ancestral home and treasure that was stolen by the dragon Smaug. Bilbo sets out in The Hobbit timid and comfort-loving, and through his adventures becomes a helpful and resourceful member of the quest.Bilbo's style of living in the Shire, defined by features such as the availability of tobacco as well as a post office, recalls that of the English middle class of the Victorian to Edwardian times. This isn't compatible with the much older world of Dwarves and Elves. Tolkien appears to have created Bilbo on the work of William Morris's Icelandic travels. Morris enjoyed his comforts but learned from his adventures. Bilbo's quest is interpreted as a journey of grace and growth in virtue and wisdom and also as a journey towards wholeness.Bilbo has been featured in many films and radio adaptations of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings as well as in video games that are based on the books.
